From the golden savannahs of Wairinding to hidden waterfalls tumbling into jungle swimming holes, Sumba sits on the eastern side of the Wallace Line, closer in character to Australia's ancient landmass than to lush Bali just across the water. It is one of Indonesia's last great frontiers and is breathtaking.

Indonesian classics like sate and nasi goreng appear on the menu, prepared with Sumba's own ingredients and reflecting the island's unique soil, climate, and culture.
Sumba's food traditions remain deeply local — shaped by centuries of community and wild surroundings. Meals are built on what the island offers each season: fresh fish, young coconut, cassava, and foraged wild greens, cooked over open fires and shared communally under the open sky.
Exploring Culture & Craft
Sumba's living culture is unlike anywhere else in Indonesia. Ancestral clan villages with towering traditional houses. Megalithic tombs carved from single stones, still central to community life. And ikat, the island's extraordinary hand-woven textile tradition, where each piece is a six-month labour of patience, natural dye, and inherited knowledge.

Three distinct stays, each chosen for character and place: the community-rooted elegance of Maringi in West Sumba; the extraordinary remoteness of Camp Tarimbang on the wild southern coast; and Morinda Villa perched high above the Kambaniru River in the east. Day 1 | Bali: Gateway Night
Your Sumba journey begins in Sanur at the legendary Tandjung Sari. An afternoon introduction to Sumbanese culture at the Manamu storytelling centre sets the scene, before the group gathers for a traditional Rijsttafel feast as the first of many shared tables.Day 2 | Welcome to Sumba
A short flight across the Flores Sea and the world shifts entirely. The team from Maringi, part of the remarkable Sumba Hospitality Foundation, meets you at Tamboloka Airport. Afternoon options include a permaculture tour of the property, spa treatments, or a half-day escape to the secluded Oro Beach for snorkelling and paddleboarding. -
Day 3 | The Bangedo Tour
A full day in West Sumba: a traditional village with its towering ancestral houses, a traditional boat journey through hundreds of mangroves along the Pero River, lunch on Pero Beach with a swim, and the serene turquoise waters of Weekuri Lagoon. Evening dinner at Makan Dulu, the restaurant run by Sumba Hospitality Foundation students.Day 4 | Explore Lamboya
A hike through emerald rice fields to Weekacura, a hidden waterfall and natural swimming hole. Then to Karaja Sumba, where master weavers guide you through the six-month ikat process. Lunch and an afternoon on the dramatic cliff-backed Watubela Beach. Sunset drinks and dinner in-house at Maringi. -
Day 5 | The Road to Tarimbang
We check out of Maringi and traverse the island south with our local guide Yuli, stopping at a local market and visiting Yuli's own traditional home village. Camp Tarimbang awaits on the remote southern coast, with tented accommodation above a beach that stops you in your tracks. Open-fire sundowners and freshly caught fish, al fresco, mark the first of our nightly rituals.Day 6 | A Day Without an Itinerary
Wake when you wake. Freshly baked bread, good coffee, and a morning surprise we'll keep sealed until the day. The afternoon is entirely yours: swim, walk the shoreline, read, or do nothing at all with great commitment. Gin and tonics at sunset, dinner by the fire. -
Day 7 | Deeper In
An optional guided jungle trek to an even more secluded beach, returning to camp by boat along a coastline that looks entirely different from the water. Or stay in camp and let Tarimbang work its magic one more time. A final evening beneath the palm-fringed canopy under the stars.Day 8 | The Long Road East
We farewell the south coast and head north-east, stopping at Wairinding Savannah where rolling golden hills and lontar palms stretch to the horizon. It is the view that best explains what it means to stand on the eastern side of the Wallace Line. Arrival at Morinda Villa, perched with 360-degree views above the Kambaniru River valley. Drinks and dinner in-house. -
Day 9 | River at Dawn and the Old Port
A sunrise canoe paddle down the Kambaniru River: paddle your own or let your captain take the helm as the sky turns from indigo to gold. A relaxed morning back at Morinda, then an afternoon with Fredi, our host and Ikat expert, visiting weavers in a traditional village. Dinner at Pelabuhan Lama, Waingapu's old port seafood market.Day 10 | The Grand Finale
Our last full day delivers some of Sumba's finest. A hike to Air Terjun Waimerang, one of the world's most perfect waterfall swimming holes. Then the extraordinary village of Rende, famous for its soaring traditional rooflines, buffalo-skin walls, and substantial megalithic burial monuments. A final stop at the iconic Walakiri Beach, with mangrove silhouettes reflected in a mirror of still sea, before a farewell dinner in-house at Morinda. -
Day 11 | Until Next Time, Sumba
Breakfast, check out, and one last stop: a surprisingly contemporary Waingapu café that wouldn't look out of place in Melbourne or Singapore. Then the airport, the runway, and one last view of this ancient and astonishing island from the air.

Sumba rewards the traveller who travels simply. Bring less, move freely, and leave space for what you’ll discover. Comfort is essential, but so is curiousity. Think breathable, beautiful, and kind — to yourself, and to the island. Lightweight, breathable clothing, comfortable shoes for walking, swimwear, a sunhat, and a shawl for temple visits. Yes. You'll be met on arrival in Bali and transferred to Tandjung Sari. We manage all transfers throughout the journey, including the Bali to Sumba leg, and deliver you back to the airport at the end of the tour.
